My oldest son has been begging my to fish so I took him out for a couple of hours to see if we could find any fish. We went across the street to the compost pile and dug a dozen worms in less than 5 minutes. It was hot and water levels everywhere were down. Still in a drought.
The first stop, Crystal Lake in Sudbury. We walked thru the woods and found a perfect little dock for casting. This lake (small pond) is very similar in proximity to Willis and has the exact water clarity as Willis, plenty of Tannin. After about 10 minutes we had only one bite and it was a small sunfish. Pleased with the catch, we moved on for more action.
Next stop, down the street to Willis. Yet even a larger dock, much more casting room and very little obstructions for a minor who's learning to cast. Even with huge night crawlers and using a bobber, the fish weren't biting. They more or less have moved to deeper and shadier waters.
Just before we packed it up I noticed the bobber was missing. I told junior to reel in the slack and that there was a fish on. As soon as the bobber was at the dock (you couldn't see 14" thru the water) I noticed he was pulling in a small painted turtle. Luckily (for both myself and the turtle) he wasn't hooked well and let go just as we were about to pull him out of the water. My son was very disappointed.
Yet still he wanted more so we made one last quick stop at the Mill. Using crawlers we tried for more Sunfish and finally, he caught I think 3, all within a span of about 5 minutes. As he drifted off into boredom and put the rod down I took a few casts with a Senco and manage to hook up a couple of times and lost what looked like two small Bass.
